What is Family Promise of Lake Houston?
Family Promise of Lake Houston (FPLH) is a faith based non-profit organization of local Congregations with the goal of assisting homeless families that need help getting back on their feet and living independently. FPLH hopes to begin serving guests in early 2009. Thirteen congregations have agreed to serve as host sites for this important ministry of compassion and action. There is also a growing list of support congregations.
At the present time a planning group of community residents is moving toward the election of a Board of Directors and hiring a program director to handle daily operations for the program that will serve up to three families each week. The Board will establish a rotation schedule that indicates when each congregation will welcome guests at their facility.
Each host congregation has agreed to serve as a site where guests will spend the night for one week four times a year. In addition to providing a place to sleep, the guests will also receive an evening meal, breakfast and sack lunches for the daytime. More information on the services provided can be found on the
Our NetworkPage.
The Support Congregations have committed to participate in FPLH by promoting the program and recruiting volunteers to work alongside those already involved in the hosting congregations.
The National Family Promise organization will provide additional information and training for all community volunteers in late September. More detailed information will be provided as soon as it is available.
Family Promise provides service opportunities for individuals, families and groups to truly make a difference in the lives of our neighbors who have fallen on hard times. Whatever your gifts, there is place for you to serve. So, pray, volunteer your time, share your treasure, and be part of this unique and needed ministry in our community.
