"They brought to [Jesus] a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hands on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and he put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, 'Ephphatha' that is, 'Be opened.' And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue released, and he spoke plainly." - Mark 7:32-35

WHAT IS THE ADVANCE?

The Advance is an official program of The United Methodist Church for voluntary, designated, second-mile giving. Through The Advance, United Methodist annual conferences, districts, local churches, organizations, individuals and families may choose to support particular, approved mission programs or mission personnel with their financial gifts.

The Advance is “designated” giving because it gives donors an opportunity to select specific mission programs or persons. The Advance is “second-mile” giving because, in The United Methodist Church, the first mile (priority) is for local churches to support World Service and other apportioned funds.

The Advance was created by the 1948 General Conference of the Methodist Church in response to the suffering and devastation caused by World War II. Today, The Advance program includes partnerships in the United States and in more than 100 countries.

The Advance is not a grant program that guarantees funding. The Advance is a transparent channel that guarantees 100% of each gift will go to the designated partnership.

The Advance is a way for persons, churches or other groups to give directly to something they believe in. Our Advance #982562: “Ministries With Deaf, Late-deafened, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-Blind People”, provides resources and funding for ministries with people who are Deaf, late-deafened, hard of hearing or deaf-blind. Donors can write a check to their local church, marking the memo Advance #982562, and the money will be sent to the Advance office.

Our Advance Brochures (stock # 528427) are free and available from Cokesbury, just call 1 800 672-1789 or email customerservice@umpublishing.org.

Reverend Peggy Johnson Elected Bishop
at the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference.

Bishop Dr. Peggy Johnson with husband Reverend Michael Johnson Report from Wineva Hankamer

Reverend Dr. Peggy Johnson, affectionately known as Rev. Pink (her favorite color), is now Bishop Pink.(picture right) She was elected at the Northeastern Jurisdictional Conference, July 16-18, 2008, and is now assigned to the Philadelphia area. This means she will no longer be serving at Christ UMC of the Deaf in Baltimore, a long time appointment for Peggy. In Baltimore she was able to raise the level of awareness of ministries with Deaf, Late-deafened, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf-blind people within the United Methodist Church, all across the nation and in many other parts of the world as well.

Peggy had been elected as president of the 2009-2012 United Methodist Committee on Ministries with Deaf, Late-deafened, Hard of Hearing and Deaf-blind People, but has given up that position so she can focus on becoming a bishop. She will certainly be our advocate, friend, and supportive person as we pursue our work and she grows in the ability to make a positive effect on world Methodism.

Bishop Peggy, we love you, honor you and wish God's great blessings on your every step, your every word, and may your hands continue to tell the Gospel story to all!

Wall Out the Walls
Ephesians 2:11-22 and Luke 6:27-36

Andrew Wyeth's painting of a stone wall in need of mending"Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground swell under it,
And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast."
[2]

Robert Frost wrote those opening words in his classic poem called “mending Wall.” Each spring, he and his neighbor carried out the ritual of restoring the stone wall that borders their adjoining New England farms. It's like a game, said Frost, one on each side, scraping fingers and hands as they lift the fallen boulders back in place.

There is, Frost tells us, a portion of the field where a wall is ridiculous. On his side is an apple orchard, on the other a grove of pine trees. Why rebuild the wall here, Frost asks his neighbor; after all, the apples won't cross over to devour the pine cones. His dour neighbor won’t laugh; solemnly, he repeats the aphorism he learned from his father and his father from his father: Good fences make good neighbors.

Well, yes. Good fences can make good neighbors, if you have a dog to keep from chasing the neighbors' cats, or from leaving evidence of its passage on the neighbor’s lawns. But, might it also be said that fences can be offensive in that they treat others as potential trespassers or enemies?

Consider also how isolating fences can be. Snoopy, Charlie Brown's inimitable dog, was an inveterate would-be author. Lucy was his severest critic. She had yet to find a Snoopy manuscript that she liked. Dismissing his latest effort, she said: "You should write a self-help book. You know, for people who are lonely and can't go any place.” Dutifully, Snoopy turned back to his trusty typewriter atop his doghouse, and wrote a new title: "How to be Happy Even Though You're Stuck in the Back Yard."[3]
